Growth Hub support helps SA Sauces put production boost on the menu
September 1, 2025
The Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Growth Hub has helped an artisan sauce producer increase production by 40 per cent after linking up with the University of Staffordshire.
SA Sauces has adopted new automation technology after a detailed diagnostic carried out by a dedicated Growth Hub business advisor.
The Madeley-based manufacturer was signposted to the University of Staffordshire’s Advanced Digital Technologies Innovation Accelerator (ADTIA) which offers a wealth of high technology equipment and expertise to drive the company forward.
SA Sauces was founded by Russ Stubbs, ten years ago.
Russ, who is managing director of the company, said: “We were looking to expand, but our existing routes to market meant that we were struggling just to maintain the orders that we were getting.
“However, we still wanted to grow, so I approached the Growth Hub for help.”
After contacting the business growth programme, a Growth Hub advisor visited SA Sauces to understand Russ’s aims and identify where he could develop the business further.
Rachel Wood, Manager at Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Growth Hub, said: “Russ wanted to make his products quicker so that he could make more to get out to the customers and get bigger orders.
“A year later and it’s amazing what he’s achieved and the equipment that he’s managed to establish in his business.
“We’re really pleased to have been able to support him on this journey.”
The ADTIA project provides students and graduates with short-term industry experience, while helping businesses integrate advanced or digital technology into their businesses.
Justin Pover, project manager at the University of Staffordshire said: “This programme showcases the opportunities for businesses in the county to expand with access to world-leading equipment and expertise.
“We’ve got professors who are internationally renowned, and a wide range of resources including robotic arms, 3D printers and testing equipment that can aid businesses with their development ambitions.
“They can benefit from our expertise and facilities, while our students and graduates have the opportunity to take on a project that gives them real industry experience.”
Over 25 weeks, a computer science graduate worked with Russ to develop options for automation, research equipment and conduct a feasibility study.
Russ added: “We received a fantastic report which offered solutions to increase productivity.
“We’ve now implemented some of that technology and seen a production increase of around 40 per cent, which is just phenomenal.
“It’s allowed us to expand our areas of operation and with the excess capacity we’re able to take advantage of extra demand and have seen our business grow quite substantially.
“The process was tremendous.
“My advice would be that if you’re an ambitious SME, go and speak to the Growth Hub as it can make a huge difference to your business.”
The ADTIA project and the dedicated business advisor are funded by UK Shared Prosperity Fund through Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council and the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Growth Hub.
