A Stoke-on-Trent based specialist provider of engineering training has marked its 60th anniversary with the official opening of a brand-new engineering workshop at its Hanley headquarters.

Originally known as the North Staffordshire Engineering Group Training Association Ltd, NSEG was established in Silverdale, Newcastle-under-Lyme, as a charity in 1966, in response to the Engineering Industry Training Board levy/grant scheme. Since then, it has been North Staffordshire’s leading provider of engineering related training and apprenticeships.

The official opening of the new workshop took place on Friday 1st May at the NSEG Training Academy in Marsh Street Hanley. It was formally opened by Gareth Snell MP, MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central.

NSEG CEO, Sarah Stanway, said: “I am immensely proud of NSEG and the work that we do to ensure engineering firms have access to world class training for their employees. We pride ourselves in working closely with employers to develop the skilled workforce of the future.

As a member-based, not-for-profit organisation, NSEG is governed by a board of trustees made up of senior representatives from our members, a structure which ensures our strategic direction remains aligned with the needs of local industry, while staying true to our charitable mission.

“NSEG is a true partnership which comprises our members, board and employees. Each shares the vision of excellence in everything we do. Our industry insight and educational know-how, allows us to deliver relevant, impactful training that meets the evolving needs of the engineering sector.”

In the past year NSEG, which employs 16 people, has dealt with 169 companies, training over 300 people, and facilitated 35 engineering apprenticeships.

Gareth Snell MP said: “I welcomed the invitation to open the newly refurbished academy and machine shop. It was a wonderful opportunity to recognise both the organisation’s 60‑year contribution to the local economy and its continued commitment to future skills and training.

“The impact this investment will have on learners, apprentices and employers across Stoke‑on‑Trent is invaluable.”
